League cup match today and a long trip to London to face a strong AFC Mottingham side. A tough draw early in the competition but having reached the semi finals last year, the players were confident of a result. However, the day did not start as planned with only 11 outfield players turning up to play due to injuries and absentees which meant a number of players in unfamiliar positions.

Mottingham took the lead early on. We were struggling with the unbelievable pace their 3 forwards had which forced further player changes, shifting our fastest boys into defence. This proved effective and Dover began to take back control of the game.
Jamie Kennedy replied for Dover when a corner was drilled into the opposition box, where he pounced on the loose ball and accurately placed his shot between a number of defenders. Kennedy was unfortunate not to add a second moments later after beating 2 defenders only to shoot straight at the keeper. Dover dominated much of the play first half as confidence grew but moments from half time, the Mottingham winger broke free on the right and fired in a cross which looped over the keeper and into Dover’s goal.

Half time Dover players were still buoyant and set about the second half again the stronger team but with no substitutes fatigue started to creep in and Mottingham scored a third 10 minutes from time. Despite further efforts from Kennedy, Wilkins and Bunn the score remained the same. The game ended 1-3 to the home side.

Despite the loss today, we were incredibly proud of the mentality of the players. The work rate and shear determination was incredible. Against all odds, they dominated much of the game in-spite of the score line. Many of the boys were struggling to even walk after which shows the complete commitment they gave throughout.

Special thanks to Karolis and George for going in goal on the day and to all outfield players who received much praise after the game from the home supporters for their efforts.
