With the season drawing to a close Dover welcomed Ashford to Tilmanstone as they looked to see out the season with another win. In what was very hot temperatures Dover had to start the game with 10 men following a number of late withdrawals. With the numerical advantage Ashford took the initiative and forced Luke Lockhart into a couple of good early saves. Despite the pressure Dover held firm and actually took be lead. Following a swift break Owen Armstrong found himself unmarked on the edge of the box and passed the ball into net to put Dover 1-0 up. Moments later, following a late call up, u14sGK Dan Smith came on to level the playing numbers. Moments later Dan was the star using his fingers to tip one shot from top corner and then blocking from close range. Dover then took a 2-0 lead following a piece of individual skill from Liam McVie who scissor kicked the ball off the crossbar into the net with a strike Cristiano Ronaldo himself would be proud of. Despite Ashford’s physical style, running and pressing Dover kept the ball better than their opponents. Although Ashford did pull one goal back midway through the second half they were not able to exert any real pressure and found themselves 3-1 down when Toby Swinn swivelled on edge of box to hook Dover further ahead. The game petered out as Dover let their opponents get tired and frustrated and then finally scored their 4th goal through top scorer George Nikaj and seal a comfortable win. For what started as a tricky day, Dover’s skill allowed another 3 points to stay with home side. With 3 final games to go Dover will be hoping for 9 points to add to their recent record of 8 wins in their last 10 games.
