Sunday saw Dover travel to high flying Ashford United in the Kent Youth League. Dover started on the front foot and forced a number of corners. The away side were unable to find the break through despite Liam McVeigh’s best efforts who saw his effort saved from close range. The failure to score seemed to boost Ashford who grew into the game. Playing direct Ashford put a lot of pressure on the backline but were forced to shoot from distance as they peppered the Dover goal. Right on the stroke of half time Dover should have been ahead after great work in the middle set Oscar Hatton through but he was unable to find the target narrowly dragging his shot wide. As both teams went in at half time both sets of supporters were wondering why it was still 0-0. The second half started and against the run of play Dover took the lead. After a free kick was failed to clear, Bailey Wadhams was on hand to bundle the ball home from close range. Dover were unable to capitalise on their fortuitous lead and Ashford dominated the next 20 mins. 0-1 quickly became 2-1 to Ashford after two defensive errors gave Ashford a deserved lead. Ashford clearly on the front foot should have put the game out of sight and only some heroic last ditch defending from Arthur Clarke and saves from Tyler King kept Dover in the game. With 10 mins left Dover punished the hosts after Jack Finn set Liam McVeigh free his shot was only parried by the Ashford GK for Bailey Wadhams to smash home from close range. 2-2 with 10 mins to play, both sides set about to win the game. It was Ashford though who looked like they won it after again Dover failed to clear the ball and the Ashford striker hooked the ball into the net to give Ashford a 3-2 lead. Dover would not give up though and managed to force an equaliser deep into injury time when after Ashford failed to clear a corner Liam McVeigh was on hand to nod in from close range.
