Dover took on a Hastings side today who came into the match as the only team in the league with 100% record. In what turned out to be a fiercely competitive fixture it was Dover who went closest first after good work from George Nikaj, Liam McVie was sent through on the right side and was denied by a smart stop at the near post. It was Hastings though who took the lead midway through the half after trying to shield the ball out Hastings intercepted and shot low towards the post and the ball squirmed in. The goal didn’t knock Dover’s confidence and after a brilliant run down the wing from Terry Mills set up a Dover corner, Dover were able to level direct from the resulting corner. In what developed into a Basketball style match it was Dover who were again caught out by a defensive error. Failing to clear the ball, Hastings hooked the ball from close range to restore their lead. Again Dover though came back, and after going close twice Dover managed to level again from another set piece. This time it was Jensen Underwood on hand to sweep the ball in from close range after the Hastings GK had dropped the ball. Dover continued to press and moments later had the ball in the net again. The goal was disallowed for marginal offside call but Dover went into the break on the front foot. Chances in the second half were few and far between and it was Dover who should of really won it late on. After a speedy counter attack sent Bailey Wadhams clean through on goal , the Hastings GK brought him down to give away a penalty to Dover. Up stepped Liam McVie but unfortunately he was unable to find the target. The game finished 2-2 but Dover’s performance and work rate was superb throughout and on another day may have seen them get 3 points.
